Experience the candid, rebellious charm of this vintage photograph of two women lighting cigarettes by a tennis net, a striking black and white press image captured in 1932. Far more than a simple sports snapshot, this beautifully restored piece embodies a fascinating chapter of social history: during the 1920s and 1930s, tobacco companies aggressively marketed cigarettes to women as powerful symbols of emancipation, sophistication, and gender equality. Originally promoted as a “relaxing” post-activity habit for modern athletes, this image perfectly captures the bold spirit of the era before the severe health risks of smoking were widely understood.

Rendered with classic early silver gelatin press photography techniques, this vintage artwork showcases crisp contrasts, rich grayscale tones, and wonderful period details, from the wooden rackets and woolen tennis dresses to the sunlit court stretching beyond the net. Celebrated today as an iconic image of interwar women’s sports and shifting social mores, the photograph remains a masterful, spirited testament to the Jazz Age “New Woman” who took to the court — and the cigarette — entirely on her own terms.
